Natural World: Invasion of the Crocodiles (1 of 23)

Invasion of the Crocodiles

First Aired: Wed 2 May 9.00pm BBC Two

Australia's deadly saltwater crocs are making a dramatic comeback. They're spreading in alarming numbers through the billabongs, rivers and beaches of the Northern Territory. Last year, over 300 had to be removed from the harbour of Darwin, the region's capital. Hundreds of cattle are being killed, and most worrying of all, attacks on people are increasing every year, often in places where crocs were previously unknown.

A 56-year-old scuba diver was reported missing by his diving partner this morning.
The man's body was found this afternoon.
Police say his injuries are consistent with a crocodile attack.

There's a growing problem in Northern Australia.
Saltwater crocodile numbers have exploded.
If you get in the water, you run the real, serious risk of getting eaten.
Crocodiles are now moving into new territory, travelling hundreds of kilometres.
They are pushing up river, along the coast.
Even far out to sea.
And now they are coming into conflict with people.
It 's a nice-looking croc.
A ten-footer.
Looks like it's heading towards Darwin.
