How to Be A Prince (34 of 65)

How to Be A Prince

Piers Brendon Edward Vll as Prince of Wales bedded all sorts of people, most famously l suppose Lily Langtree.
l mean he was notorious for it even in the Victorian age which was very staid and respectable the newspapers used to make jokes about it they said there was nothing between the Prince of Wales and Mrs Langtree not even a sheet.
Quite scandalous stuff really.
His private life got him into the headlines in a way that Victoria can't have been pleased about.
It did bring the Royal family into disrepute.
It was very, very damaging and Queen Victoria was mortified beyond belief.
She said this is the most terrible humiliation you know he'll bring the whole edifice of the monarchy crashing to the ground if he goes on misbehaving in this, in this kind of way.
But after decades of Victoria's stern rule the British people forgave Edward and he survived to become a popular King.

It might not be the same now!
Events surrounding the present royal family over the past few decades have weakened their hold over the hearts and minds of the Attitudes have changed, deference isn't what it was.
The notion of duty made sense in the 1950s you could ask the queen to sacrifice her whole life because the men and women of, of that great generation were all sacrificing their lives one way or another.
It doesn't make any sense, you know you talk about duty to your average 18 year old and they're going to give you a blank look.
It 's not a concept that has any currency anymore.
Unless the monarchy is to become irrelevant William must carve out a role for himself.
